John Wadham Gantlett, Great Sherston

John Gantlett was born in Somerford in 1801 and was the brother of Quintillian.

He was listed in a directory as a Watch and Clockmaker in Great Sherston in 1830, but by 1851 he was living in Calne and working for Quintillian. He died in 1870 and was buried in Calne.

An oak longcase with a 12” painted dial, the arch decorated with a hunting scene, the dial with seconds and calendar feature. The eight day movement strikes the hours on a bell. The oak case has mahogany fluted columns mouldings and crossbanding to the hood, and the overall height to the top of the brass finial is 84”.

There is also nice handwritten carter’s instructions on the inside of the case.
