John Ettry, Bishops Cannings

A rare oak eight day longcase clock by John Ettry, Bishops Cannings. The Ettrys were an interesting family of clock makers working in the 18th Century in Bishops Cannings and Horton, near Devizes.

The marriage of a John Iterrie occurred as early as 1625 in Bishops Cannings.

The family seemed to have a tradition of naming their children with names beginning with “J”.

This clock dates from the early part of the 18th century, c1730, and was made by a very well trained and highly skilled clock maker.

The solid and heavy oak case has a flat pediment, integral columns to the hood and long trunk door fitted with a lenticle.

The 11.75″ wide brass dial is of stunning quality and elaborate appearance featuring herringbone engraving, ringed winding holes, and cup-and-ring dial decoration.

Of eight day duration, the quality movement strikes the hour on a bell.

The overall height of this clock is 7’3″.
