Henry Hunt, Devizes

Henry Hunt (formerly Stratton), Devizes

This very unusual, spectacular and most probably unique clock dates from 1832 when Henry Hunt acquired the business of John Stratton in 11, Market Place, Devizes.

This is eight day clock is unique for its sheers scale – it is a giant version of the typical so-called “west-country” case with the scalloped hood door.

The overall height is 94” to the top of the centre finial and the dial measures 17” wide by 24” high.

It is genuine in every respect, and was probably purpose built as an advertising feature perhaps when he took over Stratton’s business or as a special commission for a large house.

Hunt sold the business to Alfred King of Chippenham at the end of 1837.

The case is mahogany with Corinthium columns to the hood and quarter columns inset in the trunk and the dial is colourfully painted with flowers, fruit and shells.

There is a secondary seconds dial and also a calendar feature.
